The live-action adaptation of Street Fighter concludes with a clear hint at continuation, as Dutch actor and bodybuilder Olivier Richters, who portrays Zangief, has disclosed that the main cast members have signed contracts encompassing three films. This revelation suggests that the franchise is being positioned as a potential trilogy.
Responding to fans’ disappointment over Zangief’s limited screen time in the current film, Richters explained in a YouTube comment that the initial approach was to offer just a glimpse of the character’s power, sparking interest for Plus. “When they asked me to play Zangief, it was all very clear. There was one goal: Show a [glimpse] of Zangief and his power, so we all want Plus,” he stated. He further confirmed, “All actors, including me, signed for three movies. ‘If a sequel is made, Zangief will shine,’ was the promise.”
Building a Foundation for Expanded Roles
Richters emphasized the challenges of giving every character significant focus within a two-hour film featuring a large ensemble. However, the multi-film agreements ensure that characters like Zangief have room to develop and take on larger roles in future installments. “You can’t expect, from a two-hour movie with so many characters, for everyone to shine in the first part,” he remarked. “But anyways, thanks for wanting to see Plus of Zangief!”
Zangief’s dramatic nightclub fight scene, which incorporates grappling techniques faithful to the video games, culminates in a practical finishing move that pays homage to his signature fighting style in the original source material. The reported three-image deals hint at a deliberate strategy to maintain continuity and deepen character arcs across the series, should the Street Fighter franchise continue.
