Switzerland secured their spot in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals by overcoming Colombia 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a goalless draw in Vancouver.

The decisive moment came when goalkeeper Gregor Kobel emerged as the hero, saving a crucial penalty from Cucho Hernandez. The Swiss then sealed their progression when Ruben Vargas calmly converted the winning spot-kick, setting up a quarter-final clash against defending champions Argentina.

The Round of 16 encounter was marked by tactical caution from both sides, with strong defensive performances limiting clear scoring opportunities. Colombia posed an early threat through Gustavo Puerta, whose curling shot from outside the area was expertly tipped over by Kobel.

Switzerland responded with attempts from Fabian Rieder and Dan Ndoye, both of which were denied by Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas. The first half ended with neither team able to break the deadlock.

Tense moments in extra time fail to produce a winner

After a balanced second half, the game intensified in extra time. Switzerland controlled Plus possession, but Colombia remained dangerous on the counterattack. One of their best chances fell to Luis Suarez, who fired a shot wide.

In extra time, Jhon Lucumi came close for Colombia with a header that struck the crossbar. Kobel then made another key save to deny Jaminton Campaz, while Vargas responded with a stop against Swiss substitute Zeki Amdouni.

Campaz missed a golden chance late in extra time to clinch the victory for Colombia, sending the match to penalties, where Switzerland ultimately triumphed.
