In the remote expanse of the Pacific Ocean, a massive concrete structure known as the Runit Dome stands as a stark reminder of Cold War nuclear testing. This imposing dome, measuring 377 feet in diameter and just 18 inches thick, encapsulates one of the most hazardous legacies of that era.

Often referred to as “The Tomb,” the dome was constructed to contain radioactive waste buried beneath it, a consequence of decades-old nuclear activities in the region. Surrounded by vibrant turquoise waters and coral reefs, the site’s serene appearance belies the dangerous materials it holds.

Origins of the Runit Dome

The story of the Runit Dome traces back to the nuclear arms race of the 1940s and 1950s, when the United States conducted extensive nuclear tests across the Marshall Islands. A total of 67 detonations took place in this region, with 43 occurring at Enewetak Atoll, the dome’s location.

Among these tests was the infamous Castle Bravo explosion at nearby Bikini Atoll, a hydrogen bomb whose power was roughly 1,000 times that of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. These detonations devastated entire islands, displaced local populations, and spread radioactive fallout across both land and seafloor.

By the late 1970s, under mounting international pressure and pleas from affected island communities, the U.S. government initiated a cleanup effort. Military engineers undertook the construction of the concrete dome, designed to serve as a containment vessel for the radioactive debris and soil excavated from the atoll.

Constructed as a massive concrete cap, the dome encloses approximately 120,000 tons of radioactive material. Despite this containment effort, concerns have persisted regarding the structure’s long-term integrity amid rising ocean levels and environmental factors threatening to expose its dangerous contents.
