Germany secured a commanding 7-1 victory over World Cup debutants Curacao in their opening Group E match held in Houston on Sunday. This win marked Germany’s first opening match triumph at a World Cup since their 2014 championship triumph.

The match began with an early breakthrough from Germany’s Felix Nmecha, who curled a beautifully placed shot around a Curacao defender and past goalkeeper Eloy Room in the sixth minute. This goal sparked a loud reaction from German coach Julian Nagelsmann, signaling confidence early in the contest.

Curacao, supported enthusiastically by their fans known as the Blue Wave, responded swiftly. Livano Comenencia scored a deflected strike that leveled the score, briefly stirring hopes of a major upset in the tournament.

Germany Pulls Away to Secure a Convincing Win

Despite the early scare, Germany quickly took control again, with a series of goals that extinguished any doubt about the match’s outcome. Nico Schlotterbeck, Kai Havertz—who netted twice—Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown, and Deniz Undav all contributed to the emphatic scoreline, ensuring that Germany dominated the encounter.

Both Nmecha and Musiala, who previously represented England at junior levels before opting to play for Germany, showed their quality throughout the match. Nmecha came close to scoring again with a powerful shot from outside the box shortly after his opener.

Meanwhile, veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, making his fifth World Cup appearance at the age of 40 and becoming the oldest German player to feature in the tournament, was largely untroubled until Curacao’s equalizer. Neuer’s experience provided a steady presence at the back as Germany prepared for tougher challenges ahead.

With their convincing win, Germany positions itself strongly in Group E, anticipating more demanding battles against Ecuador and Ivory Coast as they aim to reach the knockout stages for the first time since their 2014 victory.
