Sony has officially announced the release date for the eagerly awaited title from Santa Monica Studio, God of War: Laufey. The game is set to launch exclusively on the PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027, strategically positioned to avoid clashing with the release of GTA 6, which is scheduled for November 19, 2026. This timing grants a nearly three-month gap between the two major releases.

Unveiled during the June State of Play event, God of War: Laufey marks the next main installment in the franchise, shifting the focus away from Kratos to spotlight Faye, the wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus. The narrative begins in the aftermath of Kratos’s funeral, with Faye awakening in the Everywhen—a mythological afterlife realm where gods and creatures from diverse pantheons coexist.

Innovations in gameplay and storytelling

Maintaining the franchise’s signature blend of intense storytelling, immersive exploration, and visceral combat, Santa Monica Studio introduces a fresh fighting style tailored for Faye’s character. The gameplay will feature a fluid combination of ground and aerial attacks, integration of the giants’ magic, and a unique ability allowing Faye to separate the souls of certain foes to continue her assault. Additionally, Deborah Ann Woll returns to voice Faye, reprising her role from God of War Ragnarök.

God of War Laufey gameplay reveal

This upcoming release represents a significant chapter in Sony’s lineup, arriving amidst increasing anticipation and pressure from the gaming community. By positioning God of War: Laufey early in 2027, Sony aims to give the title its own space to shine without direct competition from other blockbuster franchises.
