In a significant boost for the reigning NWSL champions, Gotham FC has secured a contract extension for USWNT midfielder Rose Lavelle, keeping the star player with the club through 2029. Despite facing intense interest and “aggressive offers” from rival teams, Gotham successfully retained one of the league’s most sought-after talents.
Lavelle, a World Cup and Olympic champion, was poised to become one of the top free agents in 2027, making this extension a crucial move for Gotham’s ambitions. With the team already close to the salary cap ceiling, it is believed that the club utilized the new High Impact Player rule to finalize the deal.
“I think every team wants to sign Rose Lavelle,” Gotham’s President of Soccer Operations, Yael Averbuch West, told The NY Post in July. “So absolutely, we’re working every day on it.”
A Pillar of Gotham’s Success
Lavelle has played an instrumental role in Gotham’s recent dominance, contributing four goals in 19 appearances this season. Her performances have fueled a remarkable nine-game unbeaten streak, propelling Gotham to a five-point lead at the summit of the NWSL standings. Her decisive goal in the 2025 championship final and her pivotal role in capturing the inaugural Concacaf W Champions Cup underline her impact on the club’s trophy haul.
Currently, Lavelle is navigating concussion protocol after sustaining a head injury during the August 23rd goalless draw against Angel City. Her availability for the upcoming match against No. 10 Denver remains uncertain.
Gotham FC will travel to the Summit Stadium on Sunday to face Denver at 2 PM ET, with the game airing on CBS.
