Final Fantasy XIV, widely regarded as one of the best MMORPGs available today, is set to launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 on August 4. This release marks a significant milestone, allowing players to immerse themselves in the expansive world of Eorzea from a portable platform, perfectly complementing the upcoming 2027 expansion.
The game’s developer, Square Enix, is introducing a generous free-to-play option tailored specifically for this launch. Known simply as the “free trial,” this version offers new players access to the full base game, A Realm Reborn, as well as its three major expansions: Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers. Together, these provide over 200 hours of gameplay without requiring a subscription fee.
Scope and Limitations of the Free Trial
While the free trial grants extensive access to the core content, it does come with a set of well-defined restrictions designed to balance the experience. Notably, players are unable to participate in player-versus-player combat or Ultimate Raids. Additionally, social and trading features are limited: users cannot engage in trading, utilize the auction house, create groups, or communicate via chat or private messages. Forum access is also disabled. Players may hold up to 300,000 gil—the in-game currency—at any given time and can only join groups if invited.
Despite these constraints, the free trial offers a substantial portion of the Final Fantasy XIV experience, making it an ideal entry point for newcomers eager to explore the rich narratives and expansive world-building that have earned the game critical acclaim over the past decade.
