Erling Haaland continued his impressive form by securing a 1-0 victory for Manchester City against newly promoted Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium, preserving the club’s flawless start to the Premier League season under their new manager, Enzo Maresca.
Despite the win, City’s performance was far from convincing, with the home side relying heavily on two crucial late saves from goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to keep Coventry from claiming their first top-flight point in 25 years. Haaland’s decisive header just before halftime marked his third goal in as many matches this season.
The match was also notable for the debut of new signings who arrived following City’s record-breaking transfer spree, which saw the club invest a staggering £460 million ($622 million) to refresh the squad after a decade under former boss Pep Guardiola. Among the new arrivals, Enzo Fernandez and Iliman Ndiaye made their first appearances for City.
City’s Lineup Adjustments and Coventry’s Struggles
Fernandez, who joined from Chelsea for £125 million, equaling the Premier League’s transfer record, was initially set to start on the bench. However, an injury to Nico O’Reilly during the warm-up forced Maresca to include the Argentine midfielder in the starting lineup. Ndiaye was also given his first run-out alongside Haaland, Antoine Semenyo, and Rayan Cherki in a potent attacking quartet.
Coventry City, managed by Frank Lampard, returned to the Premier League after more than two decades but had yet to score or earn a point in their first three matches. Despite their struggles, they came close to ending their goal drought early in the game, testing City’s defense and Donnarumma’s reflexes.
