In HBO’s ‘House of the Dragon’, Rhaena Targaryen’s connection with the dragon Sheepstealer marks a significant departure from the narrative found in George R. R. Martin’s ‘Fire & Blood’. The daughter of Prince Daemon Targaryen and Laena Velaryon faces frustration as she is unable to claim the dragon she desires, setting the stage for a unique storyline in the series’ second season finale.
Rhaena tracks down Sheepstealer, a wild and notorious dragon known for prowling the local area. Despite her initial efforts to tame the creature failing, the dragon never shows hostility toward her. Their interactions evolve as Rhaena sings a song in High Valyrian, prompting Sheepstealer to return with several sheep. Demonstrating an unexpected bond, the dragon shares its catch with her. Without hesitation, Rhaena consumes parts of the mutton before mounting the beast, establishing a rare alliance.
Rhaena’s Role Mirrors Nettles from the Books
The series notably merges Rhaena’s character with elements of Nettles, a figure from the supplemental history ‘Blood and Fire’, who was known for riding Sheepstealer during the Dance of the Dragons. On screen, however, it is Rhaena who takes the reins in battle, commanding Sheepstealer’s loyalty and witnessing firsthand the grim demise of Jacaerys Velaryon, Queen Rhaenyra’s son. This adaptation contrasts with the novel’s depiction, where Rhaena remains behind to defend the Arryn Valley and does not engage in such combat.
