Ian McKellen, reprising his iconic role as Gandalf, has been spotted in full costume for the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. At 87 years old, the actor dons the wizard’s characteristic gray beard, long hair, and signature gray robe as filming unfolds in New Zealand.
The newly released footage offers fans a glimpse of McKellen back in character, bringing his familiar presence to this fresh Middle-earth tale. The production began in early summer, marking the return of several original cast members from the beloved trilogy.
A New Chapter in Middle-earth
The film explores a narrative previously unseen on screen, focusing on the perilous mission to capture Gollum. In this story, Gandalf entrusts Strider, the future Aragorn, with the task of tracking the elusive creature to uncover the growing darkness threatening Middle-earth.
While Elijah Wood returns as Frodo, Viggo Mortensen will not reprise his role as Aragorn. Instead, Jamie Dornan steps into the role, portraying a younger Strider before he fully embraces his destiny as the heir of Gondor’s throne. This casting choice reflects the film’s intent to depict a distinct phase in Aragorn’s journey.
