Iva Jovic secured her place in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Ningbo Open by defeating Jasmine Paolini in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, on Thursday. The rising American star, who continues to impress this season, needed just 1 hour and 22 minutes to overcome the former world No. 4 and notch her 42nd WTA tour-level victory of the year.

Paolini Starts Strong, But Jovic Seizes Control

Paolini began the match with an early surge, breaking Jovic’s serve to build a 3-1 lead. However, the momentum quickly shifted as Jovic responded with two consecutive breaks, allowing her to claim the first set. Maintaining her composure, she extended her advantage in the second set, opening up a 4-1 lead. Although Paolini fought back to narrow the gap to 4-3, Jovic held her nerve to serve out the match, securing another break to close out the contest.

This victory marks the second consecutive win for Jovic over Paolini, evening their head-to-head record at 2-2. The pair previously met in the third round of the 2026 Australian Open, where Jovic also emerged victorious.

Jovic’s 2026 campaign continues to gain momentum. Ningbo represents her seventh quarterfinal appearance on the WTA tour this year, and she has successfully converted five of her last six quarterfinals into semifinal berths. Notably, this win is her 20th against a top-50 ranked opponent during the season.

Looking ahead, Jovic will face the tournament’s No. 6 seed Diana Shnaider in the quarterfinals. Shnaider advanced earlier in the day by defeating Alexandra Eala, setting the stage for a compelling clash for a spot in the semifinals.
