Karolína Muchová secured the final berth for the 2026 WTA Finals after her rival, Marta Kostyuk, was forced to retire during her second-round match at the 2026 Ningbo Open. Kostyuk, trailing Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4 in the opening set, withdrew due to injury, effectively handing Muchová the last available spot in the prestigious year-end tournament.

Marta Kostyuk’s Injury Opens Door for Karolína Muchová

Prior to her retirement, Kostyuk had been grappling with a persistent right wrist issue that sidelined her from the China Open earlier in the month. Her recent first-round exit in Wuhan compounded her troubles, leaving her with a narrow path to qualify. Entering the Ningbo Open, Kostyuk trailed Muchová by 815 points in the WTA rankings, meaning only a deep run to the final would have kept her qualification hopes alive.

With Kostyuk’s withdrawal, Muchová’s place at the WTA Finals is confirmed. She will make her debut appearance at the year-end championship, scheduled to begin on November 8 in Indian Wells.

Muchová’s Strong Season to End in Indian Wells

The 30-year-old Czech player has delivered an impressive campaign throughout the year. She claimed titles at Doha and Bad Homburg and made a notable run to the Wimbledon final, solidifying her status among the elite. Muchová now joins an elite field of seven other competitors, including Elena Rybakina, Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Mirra Andreeva, Elina Svitolina, and Linda Nosková, all set to contest the eight-player event.
