Middlesbrough, competing in the English Championship, have made a significant investment in American talent during recent transfer windows as they aim to secure promotion back to the Premier League. The club’s strategy has involved bringing in multiple players from Major League Soccer (MLS) and the US national team setup, a move that has drawn attention for its ambition and potential impact.

Earlier this year, Middlesbrough secured the signing of Aidan Morris from Columbus Crew. The midfielder, who has earned 14 caps for the US Men’s National Team (USMNT), impressed the club enough to motivate further scouting in the MLS. This approach led to the acquisition of two more Americans in the summer transfer window.

Building an American Core

Following Morris, Middlesbrough added Max Arfsten, a left-back who was part of the US squad at the 2026 World Cup under manager Mauricio Pochettino. Although Arfsten’s playing time in the tournament was limited to a brief injury-time appearance during the round of 16 match against Belgium, his inclusion signals Middlesbrough’s trust in his potential.

Not long before Arfsten’s arrival, the club had also signed Sebastian Berhalter from Vancouver Whitecaps. The 25-year-old midfielder featured prominently for the US throughout the summer tournament, participating in all five games and scoring in his only start against Türkiye. His experience and versatility add depth to Middlesbrough’s midfield options.

Completing the quartet of American players, Middlesbrough made a late-window move to sign Rokas Pukštas from Croatian side Hajduk Split. Born in Oklahoma to Lithuanian parents, Pukštas has represented the United States at various youth levels, including U-15, U-20, and U-23, though he is yet to debut for the senior national team. His arrival underscores the club’s ongoing commitment to integrating emerging American talent into their squad.

While Kim Hellberg, Middlesbrough’s head coach, has expressed admiration for the contributions of these four Americans, he also notes there is room for improvement in certain aspects of their play. The club’s blend of US-based players, international experience, and youthful potential reflects a strategic approach aimed at strengthening the team’s competitive edge in the Championship.
