Following a series of strong performances for the Philadelphia Union, 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan has caught the attention of USMNT legend Landon Donovan, who insists that head coach Mauricio Pochettino should consider integrating the young talent into the national team setup without delay.
With the World Cup now behind them, the United States Men’s National Team faces a crucial stretch of fixtures against Mexico, Canada, Peru, and Chile. These upcoming matches offer Pochettino four valuable chances to evaluate players and strengthen his squad. Donovan, however, is convinced that Sullivan’s inclusion should be prioritized.
Sullivan’s recent displays for the Philadelphia Union have been remarkable. In a standout match against the New York Red Bulls, the teenager skillfully cut in from the right flank and finished with his left foot, showcasing his composure and technical ability. He followed that up by scoring again against Montreal, bringing his tally to four goals and seven assists since his return to action.
Donovan’s Call for Immediate Action
Speaking on Unfiltered Soccer, Donovan made a compelling case for the 16-year-old’s early involvement with the USMNT. “I’m saying call him in,” he urged. “There are not many attacking players in America, who are American, who are doing [this]. In fact, I don’t think there are any.”
Highlighting Sullivan’s youth and potential, Donovan added, “And he’s 16, Tim. So, if you think he’s part of it in four years, get him in. Get him in now.”
