At the 2026 Pan Pacific Championships, Australian swimmer Lani Pallister delivered a stunning performance by defeating American legend Katie Ledecky in two pivotal freestyle events, ending Ledecky’s extraordinary 14-year streak of gold medals.

Following a narrow loss to Ledecky in the 1,500-meter freestyle, Pallister bounced back to claim victory in the 400-meter freestyle. She then triumphed in the decisive 800-meter race, securing her place at the top and halting the dominance of the University of Virginia alumna.

Reflecting on her rival’s impact, Pallister acknowledged Ledecky’s influence on the sport, stating, “Katie’s such a dominant force. Without her, we wouldn’t have women’s distance swimming in the place where it is.”

United States Breaks a Nine-Year Drought in the Relay

In addition to Pallister’s victories, the United States team made headlines by winning the 4×100-meter freestyle relay, overcoming Australia for the first time in nine years. The American quartet—Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh, Torri Huske, and Simone Manuel—set a new US record with a time of 3:29.32, marking a significant achievement for the squad.

Kate Douglass, who also excelled individually, shattered the 50-meter freestyle world record twice within a single day, showcasing her sprinting prowess. Meanwhile, Gretchen Walsh dominated the butterfly sprints, completing a sweep of those events.
