The continuation of the acclaimed series ‘Lanterns’ remains uncertain, despite its strong reception and the confirmed appearance of John Stewart in the upcoming ‘Man of Tomorrow’. This update comes from Peter Safran, co-head of DC Studios, who addressed the future of the show in a recent interview.

Future of ‘Lanterns’ Hinges on Delivering a Strong Follow-Up

Speaking with Collider, Safran revealed that while no official decision has been made, the fate of the series will likely be determined before the end of 2026. He emphasized that any potential second season must live up to the quality and impact of the first. “If we’re able to come up with what we believe to be a worthy successor to a beloved and great first season, that’s what’s going to dictate whether there’s a second season,” Safran explained.

‘Lanterns’ season 2 could be decided before the end of 2026, Peter Safran says

Safran also praised the show’s role in revitalizing the Green Lantern character, who had been largely absent from mainstream media since the 2011 film. Reflecting on the series’ impact, he stated, “This was one great season of television based on a property that had been somewhat neglected since 2011, right? The most gratifying thing about this show and this season on HBO is that it has brought Green Lantern back into the conversation and into popular culture in a really positive way.”

‘Lanterns’ faced the significant challenge of proving the viability of the Green Lantern franchise in live-action form, overcoming the shadow cast by Ryan Reynolds’ critically panned 2011 movie. After years of being one of DC’s most promising yet unfulfilled properties, the series has successfully reintroduced the iconic hero to a new generation of viewers, setting a high bar for any future installments.
