The 2026 edition of the Tour de France Femmes is set to commence this weekend with a challenging 138-kilometer route in Switzerland, marking only the second occasion the race has started beyond French borders. This fifth iteration promises an intense battle for the coveted yellow jersey from the very first stage.

Stage 1: A Demanding Course in Lausanne

The opening stage will both start and finish in Lausanne, taking riders along the scenic shores of Lake Geneva before veering inland toward Lake Neuchatel. Along this course, three category 3 climbs are expected to begin sifting the contenders well ahead of the final kilometers.

However, the defining challenge awaits near the finish line. The Cote Saint-Francois, a steep 2.6-kilometer ascent, culminates just 400 meters from the stage’s end. This uphill stretch will likely determine which riders possess the rare combination of sprinting speed and climbing prowess necessary to claim the first yellow jersey of the race.

Lorena Wiebes Aims to Defend Her Yellow Jersey

Among the favorites to excel on this demanding terrain is Dutch rider Lorena Wiebes, whose impressive record includes five stage victories spanning four editions of the Tour de France Femmes. Known for her sprinting strength combined with tactical acumen on climbs, Wiebes sees herself well-positioned to seize the early lead.

In preparation for the race, the SD Worx-Protime sprinter emphasized the importance of a strong start: “It’s important to start good and try to win as many stages as possible here. Everything needs to be perfect.” Her ambitions reflect the fiercely competitive spirit that defines this prestigious event.
