The 2026 U.S. Open is set to take place at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York, featuring a significant presence from the LIV Golf league. Among the 156 players who have secured their spots, 13 competitors from the Saudi-backed tour will participate, including four former U.S. Open champions. The major tournaments maintain an open-door policy: regardless of tour affiliation, qualification guarantees entry.
Former U.S. Open Champions Among LIV Golfers
The LIV contingent boasts a notable collection of past champions, underscoring the league’s competitive quality. Leading the group is Jon Rahm, currently ranked eighth in the world and the 2021 U.S. Open champion, who gained automatic exemption as a previous winner. Two-time champion Bryson DeChambeau, victorious in both 2020 and 2024, also secured his place. Meanwhile, Dustin Johnson, the 2016 champion, qualified through LIV’s top-three exemption for players not otherwise exempt. Lastly, Graeme McDowell, the 2010 winner, earned his spot via Final Qualifying rounds.
Qualification Through Rankings and Recent Performances
Beyond the former champions, several LIV players have earned entry based on their world rankings and recent results. Tyrrell Hatton and Carlos Ortiz both secured qualification by finishing tied for fourth at the 2025 U.S. Open. Players like Joaquin Niemann and Lucas Herbert qualified through top-three finishes in the LIV standings. Additionally, David Puig gained entry by ranking inside the world’s top 60. Cameron Smith also holds an exemption as the 2022 Open champion.
