Manchester City finalized the signing of Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea on Tuesday, securing the player in a transfer deal reported to be worth £125 million ($167 million). This fee matches the British transfer record set last year by Liverpool when they acquired Swedish striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle.
Fernandez, 25, will be a key figure in the reshaped central midfield at the Etihad Stadium, joining England’s Elliot Anderson and Moroccan talent Ayyoub Bouaddi. The trio represents an investment exceeding £300 million in midfield reinforcements for the club.
Strategic Midfield Overhaul Under New Management
The arrival of Fernandez comes amid significant changes in Manchester City’s squad following the sale of World Cup winner Rodri to Barcelona, as well as the departures of midfielders Bernardo Silva, Nico Gonzalez, and Tijjani Reijnders. City’s new head coach, Enzo Maresca, who previously worked with Fernandez at Chelsea, played a pivotal role in orchestrating the transfer. Taking over from Pep Guardiola, Maresca has swiftly moved to strengthen his midfield options.

Additionally, Chelsea’s manager, Xabi Alonso, recently excluded Fernandez from his squad selections, underscoring the player’s uncertain future at the club prior to the transfer.
