Manchester City commenced their defense of the Women’s Super League title with a 3-1 victory over Birmingham City at Joie Stadium on Sunday, marking a strong start to the 2026/27 season.
Manchester City Launches Women’s Super League Season with Win
The first half remained goalless as both teams struggled to break the deadlock. It was in the 49th minute when Mary Fowler shifted the momentum, netting a one-touch finish that also represented Manchester City’s 1,000th professional goal.
Following Fowler’s milestone strike, Jamaican forward Khadija “Bunny” Shaw stepped into the spotlight. She connected with a corner delivered by Kerstin Casparij, heading the ball firmly into the net to extend City’s lead to 2-0. Shaw later completed her brace with a goal assisted by Beth Mead, cementing City’s dominance in the match. Meanwhile, Lauren Hemp celebrated her 200th appearance for the club by earning Player of the Match honors.
Birmingham City, returning to the top tier after a recent promotion, managed a consolation goal in stoppage time through Océane Hurtré, but the deficit was too substantial to overturn by then.
Reflecting on the victory, Shaw emphasized the importance of the win and maintaining momentum: “The most important thing was to get the win and start off on the right foot. We have to keep on going.”
With this opening day success, Manchester City shares the top of the WSL table on points alongside Arsenal, Liverpool, and Tottenham.
