The 19-year-old Italian gymnast, already the continental champion in both 2024 and 2025, begins her campaign at Arena Zagreb, which is hosting the event for the first time.
This championship also serves as a key qualifier for the upcoming Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028, raising the stakes for all competitors. Esposito’s primary rival this year is the reigning world all-around champion, Angelina Melnikova of Russia. Melnikova’s participation was uncertain after Croatian authorities initially denied visas to nine members of the Russian delegation. However, through diplomatic negotiations, Melnikova and teammate Anna Kalmykova have now received approval to compete. Unfortunately, Olympic champion Viktoria Listunova was unable to overturn her visa denial and will not participate.

Beyond Esposito and Melnikova, the competition features a robust roster of gymnasts. Italy’s Alice D’Amato, the balance beam champion from Paris 2024, is among the contenders. From Great Britain, veteran gymnast Becky Downie returns to international competition after a lengthy injury hiatus, marking her comeback at age 34. Additionally, France introduces Elena Colas, who makes her senior continental debut this week.
