The Maryland Charm claimed their first-ever title in the Women’s Lacrosse League (WLL), marking a significant milestone in the sport’s emerging professional circuit. The championship game, held at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania, saw the Charm secure a 16-13 victory against the California Palms, thanks in large part to the standout performance of USA Lacrosse star Sydni Black.
USA Lacrosse Stars Fuel Maryland Charm’s WLL Win
Black, who has been a driving force for Maryland throughout the season, dominated the final with four goals and one assist, earning her the Most Valuable Player award. The match itself was a thrilling back-and-forth contest defined by high scoring. Maryland opened with a commanding 9-4 lead, but the California Palms rallied to level the score at 9-9 just before halftime.
Refusing to falter, the Charm responded with a decisive three-goal run, pushing the score to 12-9. Despite persistent efforts from California to close the gap, Maryland maintained their momentum and held on to their lead until the final whistle.
Contributing an unexpected boost, attacker Alex Holman delivered a hat trick, a remarkable feat given she had not scored during the regular season. Holman’s performance was particularly notable as it came only ten months after the University of Maryland alumna gave birth to her son, underscoring her rapid return to elite form. Her game-winner was a pivotal moment that helped seal the victory for the Charm.
Goalkeepers Caylee Waters and Jenika Cuocco combined to make 17 crucial saves, their efforts proving instrumental in preserving Maryland’s slim lead. Their strong defensive presence was key to securing this landmark win for the fledgling league, which operates under the sanction of USA Lacrosse.
The triumph not only crowns Maryland as the inaugural WLL champions but also highlights the growing talent pool anticipated to contribute to USA Lacrosse’s ambitions ahead of the 2028 LA Olympics.
