Kylian Mbappe propelled France to a 3-1 victory over Senegal in their opening Group I match on Tuesday, marking a powerful start to their campaign for a third World Cup title.

The Real Madrid forward’s two goals elevated his career World Cup tally to 14, bringing him within striking distance of the all-time record held by Miroslav Klose. Alongside Mbappe’s efforts, Bradley Barcola also found the net, securing all three points for Didier Deschamps’ squad.

France encountered difficulties in the first half, struggling to find rhythm and control. However, the team’s fortunes shifted dramatically after halftime. The breakthrough came in the 66th minute when Mbappe expertly darted across the penalty area to finish a precise pass from Michael Olise, who had been strategically moved infield from the right wing by coach Deschamps. This tactical adjustment proved pivotal in unlocking the Senegalese defense and changing the course of the match.

Late Drama Seals the Win

As the match entered its final stages, Paris Saint-Germain’s Barcola, introduced from the bench, doubled France’s advantage with a timely goal. Senegal’s response came in stoppage time through Ibrahim Mbaye, also of PSG, offering a late consolation for the African side.

Yet, Mbappe ensured there would be no comeback, unleashing a powerful long-range shot in the 96th minute to seal the victory. This goal not only confirmed the win but also elevated Mbappe to become France’s all-time leading scorer with 58 international goals, a milestone achieved during his 99th appearance for the national team.

Mbappe’s performance reinforced his exceptional World Cup legacy. Having scored in the 2018 final when France lifted the trophy, and netting a remarkable hat-trick in the 2022 final—albeit in a losing effort against Argentina—the forward continues to be the focal point of France’s ambitions on football’s biggest stage.
