Mercedes Russell, a seasoned 6-foot-6 center, has joined the Indiana Fever to strengthen their frontcourt following the season-ending knee injury of Damiris Dantas. The Fever announced the signing on Monday, utilizing a season-ending injury exception to add Russell to their roster.
Dantas, prior to her injury and subsequent meniscus surgery, featured in 12 games this season, contributing an average of 3.3 points and 1.5 rebounds off the bench under head coach Stephanie White. Although her minutes were limited, her veteran presence was a valuable asset for the team’s frontcourt depth.

Russell now steps into the role previously held by Dantas, joining a frontcourt rotation that includes Myisha Hines-Allen, Monique Billings, and second-year forward Makayla Timpson. At 31 years old, Russell brings a wealth of experience and a winning pedigree to Indiana’s lineup.
Her career highlights include two WNBA championships with the Seattle Storm in 2018 and 2020. Over the course of 209 WNBA games, Russell has averaged 4.6 points and 3.8 rebounds, demonstrating consistent production as a reliable center. Most recently, she appeared in 20 games off the bench for the LA Sparks last season.
Beyond the WNBA, Russell has also found success overseas, capturing the 2024 WNBL championship with Australia’s Southside Flyers and earning Grand Final MVP honors for her performance.
With Russell’s addition, the Fever are bolstering their roster as they aim to maintain their strong position near the top of the WNBA standings and prepare for a competitive playoff push.
