Lionel Messi is set to wear Argentina’s iconic sky blue-and-white jersey for the final time this Tuesday, marking the end of a remarkable 21-year international career. The farewell match will take place at Buenos Aires’ Estadio Monumental, South America’s largest stadium, where approximately 85,000 fans are expected to witness the 39-year-old icon’s last performance for his national team.

Millions more around the world will tune in to watch the friendly against Benin, which serves as a poignant curtain call for Messi’s legendary tenure with Argentina. As the country’s most-capped player, his retirement follows the heartbreak of losing the World Cup final to Spain just two and a half months ago.

Farewell and Recognition

Just a day before the match, Messi participated in his final training session at the team’s complex in Ezeiza, a suburb of Buenos Aires. The training ground bears his name, underscoring his profound impact on Argentine football. Fans gathered there to show their support, reflecting the deep admiration and respect he commands. “I believe Messi gave everything, absolutely everything, so it doesn’t bother me at all that he’s leaving. He has more than earned it, let him enjoy himself, let him rest,” said Cecilia Adriano, a 52-year-old supporter speaking to AFP.

When Messi announced his retirement from international football in August, he emphasized his commitment and readiness to step aside for the next generation. “I gave it my all; I have nothing left to give, and besides, there are great young players coming up who deserve their chance,” he wrote.

In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to football and Argentine culture, the University of Buenos Aires will award Messi an honorary doctorate before the match begins.

Although Messi is concluding his international career, his professional journey continues at club level with Inter Miami, where he remains under contract until 2028.
