Jose Mourinho, returning to Real Madrid for his second tenure as head coach, has declared that his primary goal is to establish the right cultural foundation within the club. Speaking on Friday, Mourinho emphasized that his role goes beyond winning trophies—he is focused on fostering a strong work ethic and sense of responsibility among players and staff alike.
Having taken over from Álvaro Arbeloa in June, Mourinho was present at the club’s training facility overseeing preparations ahead of the upcoming pre-season. His appointment comes after two trophyless seasons for Los Blancos, a period marked by internal challenges and a lack of cohesion on the pitch.
President Florentino Pérez has reportedly entrusted Mourinho with the task of restoring discipline and order within the dressing room, a challenge that the veteran Portuguese coach acknowledges as a serious undertaking rather than a mere job.
Building a New Culture of Responsibility
“Words are not enough because this is like a mission,” Mourinho told Real Madrid TV. “I’m not worried about myself, or if I will win a lot or a little. I am here to help everyone be better: players, staff… to create a culture of work, responsibility, ambition, and something I know well, which is the responsibility and honour of working for Real Madrid.”
The previous season was marred by tension, with star players proving difficult to manage. The club witnessed the departure of coach Xabi Alonso in January and a confrontation between midfielders Aurelien Tchouameni and Fede Valverde in May, which resulted in Valverde requiring hospital treatment.
Moreover, neither Alonso nor Arbeloa succeeded in harmonizing the talents of marquee players such as Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, and Vinicius Junior. Attempts to field these key players simultaneously often disrupted the team’s balance on the field, highlighting the pressing need for a new direction.
