Nike is set to release the Air Zoom Huarache 2K4 “Sue Bird” sneaker to the public this summer, marking the first time the signature shoe of the WNBA icon will be available outside of player exclusives. Previously only worn by Sue Bird herself, this retro model pays tribute to her storied career with the Seattle Storm.
The design faithfully replicates the pair Bird wore while orchestrating the Storm’s offense. Featuring a predominantly white upper, the shoe combines synthetic leather and breathable mesh for comfort and durability. Forest green and golden yellow details accentuate key areas like the midfoot Swoosh, collar padding, and heel counter, directly reflecting the colors of Seattle’s jerseys.
History & Design Behind Nike’s Signature Sue Bird Shoe
Originally crafted exclusively for Sue Bird in the mid-2000s, the Air Zoom Huarache 2K4 holds deep significance in her basketball journey. Bird, who was the first overall pick in the 2002 WNBA Draft, devoted her entire 21-season career to the Seattle Storm. Throughout that time, she established herself as the league’s all-time leader in assists and wins, secured 13 All-Star appearances, and helped her team capture four WNBA championships.
Her impact extended beyond the WNBA, as she amassed five Olympic gold medals representing the United States. Bird’s contributions to the sport were officially recognized with her induction into the Hall of Fame in 2025, cementing her legacy as one of basketball’s greats. The Huarache 2K4s were not only her footwear of choice on the court but also accompanied her during key moments, including her first Olympic gold medal.
