NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman revealed the league’s 2027 schedule framework during the midseason press conference on Wednesday, announcing an unprecedented early start to the upcoming season. The campaign will launch on February 11th, marking the earliest kickoff in the history of the National Women’s Soccer League.
This strategic adjustment aims to accommodate the Women’s World Cup scheduled to take place in Brazil later that year. By starting the season in early February, the league creates ample space for a summer hiatus aligned with both the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) mandated rest period and the international tournament.
Season Highlights and Strategic Timing
The 2027 season opener is set for Angel City’s BMO Stadium, deliberately timed to coincide with Super Bowl LXI at nearby SoFi Stadium. This scheduling choice seeks to leverage the momentum gained from the league’s recent “Summer of Soccer” initiative and capitalize on the heightened attention surrounding one of the biggest weekends in American sports.
Commissioner Berman emphasized the league’s intent to build on the success from leaning into the Men’s World Cup earlier this year, which spurred notable growth across social media platforms. “We have intentionally — again, seeing the success we’ve had leaning into the halo of the Men’s World Cup — [applied] the same thesis for next year,” she remarked.
The 2027 Challenge Cup will precede the regular season, kicking off on February 6th. This tournament will feature a matchup between the current Shield holder and the 2026 NWSL champion, contested at a neutral venue.
With the early start, the league has scheduled a seven-week summer break from June 7th to July 25th. This pause accommodates the World Cup and ensures players receive rest in accordance with the CBA, a significant consideration given that 61 NWSL players participated in the 2023 edition of the tournament.
All 16 clubs will participate in a 30-match regular season, maintaining the league’s established format. The season will culminate with Decision Day on October 31st, followed by the championship match set for November 20th.
