The Social Security Administration (SSA) has commenced its October 2026 payment cycle, initiating the distribution of benefits across its core programs. This month, the agency will execute five separate payment runs, covering both Social Security—including retirement, disability, and survivor benefits—and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
Beginning Thursday, October 1, the SSA is scheduled to disburse payments to SSI recipients. This program supports individuals who are either over 65 or have disabilities and meet low-income and limited resource criteria. According to the latest data from the SSA, the average monthly SSI payment stands at $738.73.
Notably distinct from Social Security, SSI eligibility does not require claimants to have earned work credits, making it accessible to a wider demographic of vulnerable individuals. The program currently serves over 7.3 million beneficiaries.
Social Security Payments Follow Midweek Schedule
Following the initial SSI payment run, the SSA will transition to its customary three-Wednesdays payment cycle for Social Security benefits. This schedule applies to the 71.5 million Americans who receive retirement, disability, or survivor benefits. The midweek payments are strategically distributed across Wednesdays to accommodate different groups based on the recipients’ birth dates.
