The Orlando Pride secured a 2-1 victory over the Houston Dash on Sunday, yet their hopes of reaching the NWSL playoffs were dashed shortly afterward. Earlier in the day, a 3-1 defeat for Orlando’s rivals at the hands of the Seattle Reign officially ended Orlando’s postseason ambitions, leaving them in 11th place in the league standings.

Orlando’s Late-Season Surge Against Houston Not Enough for Playoffs

On the field, Orlando had reasons to celebrate. Rookie forward Solai Washington spearheaded the Pride’s offense from the outset, drawing a penalty in the 15th minute that was successfully converted by Luana to give Orlando the early lead. Less than twenty minutes later, Washington scored her first career NWSL goal, assisted by Brazilian icon Marta.

The Dash responded with a goal after halftime, narrowing the deficit, but Orlando maintained their composure to close out the win. Despite this strong performance, the result highlighted the club’s challenging season. As the reigning NWSL Shield and Championship winners from 2024, the Pride have struggled considerably this year, a downturn intensified by a midseason coaching change.

Since taking over as interim head coach, Yolanda Thomas has managed a 3-2-1 record, providing some stability but ultimately unable to reverse Orlando’s fortunes enough to salvage a playoff spot. With two matches remaining against Gotham FC and Seattle Reign, Orlando faces an uphill battle to improve their standing before the season closes.
