Patty Gasso stepped into her role as the head coach of USA Softball during the 2026 WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup, held in Oklahoma City. This tournament, taking place at Devon Park, serves as the initial qualifying stage for softball’s return to the Olympic program at LA 28.
Gasso, who was officially introduced as the national team’s head coach on September 12th before the group matches began, brings an impressive record to the position. With eight national championships and four consecutive titles at the University of Oklahoma, her leadership experience is already translating into dominant performances on the field.
Strong Start for USA Softball Under New Leadership
Under Gasso’s guidance, the United States has swiftly asserted its dominance in the group stage, overpowering Mexico, Brazil, and the Netherlands. The competition ahead includes matches against China, New Zealand, and South Africa before the group phase concludes.
The stakes remain high, as only the top two teams from this stage will secure advancement to the World Cup Finals, scheduled for next April in Redcliffe, Australia. Beyond that, just one Olympic berth is available through this pathway, intensifying the pressure on all contenders.
Looking toward the future, Gasso has already set her sights on the 2028 Olympics, which will take place in Oklahoma City. Emphasizing the weight of expectations, she remarked on the inherent goal for the United States in Olympic sports: to claim the gold medal.
