PlayStation’s ambitious plans for its live-service game lineup have encountered significant setbacks, highlighted by the cancellation of titles such as The Last of Us Factions and Concord. While some projects managed to survive these cuts, the fate of Horizon Hunters Gathering, developed by the Amsterdam-based studio Guerrilla Games, has recently taken an unexpected turn.

Major Overhaul for Horizon Hunters Gathering

According to reports by Jason Schreier for Bloomberg, Horizon Hunters Gathering has been undergoing a substantial reboot since June 2026, triggered by overwhelmingly negative feedback from players during recent playtesting phases. The initial vision for the game, which embraced extensive game-as-a-service mechanics, is now being abandoned in favor of a more streamlined approach.

The development team is shifting away from the complexities of live-service features and instead focusing on delivering a more traditional multiplayer co-op experience. This revamped version will include a story mode but will omit the broader service-based elements originally planned.

Schreier further reveals that a significant portion of Guerrilla Games’ resources had been dedicated to this project, which has impacted the studio’s capacity to advance other titles. As a result, the next major entry in the Horizon franchise remains “very, very far” from release, with no imminent launch on the horizon.
