The 2026 Asian swing has shaken up the WTA rankings dramatically, highlighted by breakthrough performances from Qinwen Zheng, Mirra Andreeva, and Coco Gauff. This week’s tournaments have delivered a series of upsets and milestones, reshaping the landscape of women’s tennis on the global stage.

The 2026 China Open Rearranges the WTA Rankings

At the forefront of this shakeup stands Qinwen Zheng, whose triumph at the 2026 China Open marked a historic moment. Zheng became the first Chinese player to claim the title in the tournament’s 32-year history, securing her sixth career championship on home soil. This victory propelled her ranking from No. 54 to a remarkable No. 23. Even more noteworthy is her rapid ascent after an elbow injury last July left her at No. 160 as recently as June.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Mirra Andreeva made significant strides despite falling short of the title in Beijing. She climbed to No. 3 in the WTA rankings, becoming the youngest player to reach this position since Maria Sharapova at 17 in 2005. Over the course of 2026, Andreeva has reached five finals, equaling the achievements of top players like Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, and current No. 1 Elena Rybakina.

In contrast, Coco Gauff faced a challenging stretch during the Asian swing. After suffering a defeat to Elise Mertens, who ended a five-match losing streak against the three-time Grand Slam champion, Gauff’s campaign stalled. Nevertheless, Mertens’s victory propelled her to the semifinals and helped her rise five spots to No. 14 in the rankings.
