Real Madrid has announced plans to appoint retired tennis legend Rafael Nadal to its board of directors, marking a significant addition to the club’s leadership. This development was confirmed on Wednesday, highlighting the deepening ties between the football giant and the celebrated athlete.

Nadal, who boasts an extraordinary career with 22 Grand Slam titles, has been an honorary member of Real Madrid since 2011. His longstanding friendship with club president Florentino Perez underscores the mutual respect between the two sporting icons.

A New Chapter for Nadal at Real Madrid

In an official statement, Real Madrid expressed great pride in welcoming Nadal to the board, describing him as “a benchmark of Spanish and world sport” whose presence will positively influence the club’s present and future. The club’s socios, or members, are set to vote on Nadal’s formal appointment during the upcoming general assembly scheduled for November 21.

Responding to the announcement on the social media platform X, Nadal conveyed his gratitude to Perez and the board for the opportunity. “I have accepted this proposal with great excitement, I’m eager to learn and to contribute everything I can,” he wrote, signaling his enthusiasm to embrace this new role.

Throughout his illustrious tennis career, Nadal has etched his name into the record books with a remarkable 14 French Open singles titles. In recent years, he has expressed aspirations beyond the tennis court, mentioning in 2023 his interest in potentially becoming president of Real Madrid, though he acknowledged uncertainty regarding his qualifications for such a role.

Despite speculation, Nadal clarified ahead of this year’s club elections that he would not be running as a candidate. The elections themselves saw Florentino Perez secure another term after defeating challenger Enrique Riquelme in June.
