The North Carolina Courage secured a 2-0 victory on the road against Denver Summit FC in the sole NWSL midweek fixture on Wednesday, marking their second consecutive shutout.
Penalty Gives NC Courage 2nd-Half Lead Over Denver Summit
After a goalless first half where both teams exchanged opportunities, the match’s momentum shifted early in the second half. Just three minutes after the break, a foul by Summit defender Eva Gaetino on Courage midfielder Erica Parkinson inside the penalty area earned North Carolina a spot-kick. Riley Jackson confidently converted the penalty in the 48th minute, giving the Courage the lead.
The home side, determined to find an equalizer, maintained pressure but failed to break through the Courage’s defense. Then, in the 81st minute, Ally Schlegel, a Colorado native, extended the lead with a precise finish past goalkeeper Abby Smith, effectively sealing the win.
Goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan was instrumental in preserving the clean sheet, making six crucial saves to secure her fifth shutout of the season for the Courage.
Notably, the match featured a last-minute change before kickoff, as Denver captain Lindsey Heaps, who also captains the USWNT, was unexpectedly withdrawn from the starting lineup despite being initially named.
Both teams face quick turnarounds ahead. The Courage will travel to face the Washington Spirit on Saturday, while the Summit prepare to host the rising Utah Royals in their upcoming NWSL fixtures.
