Roberto Martinez has officially announced his resignation as head coach of the Portugal national football team following their exit from the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.
The Portuguese side was eliminated after a narrow 1-0 defeat against Spain in Arlington, with Mikel Merino scoring the decisive goal deep into stoppage time, securing Spain’s progression to the quarter-finals and ending Portugal’s campaign.
In a statement delivered after the match, Martinez confirmed that the game marked his final appearance as Portugal’s manager.
“It is true that it was my last game with the Portugal national team,” he said, expressing his gratitude to the Portuguese supporters. “Thank you to the Portuguese people because it was an incredible period, a pride which I can’t describe.”
A Reflective Farewell After Three Years at the Helm
Martinez, 52, highlighted the passionate support from fans throughout his tenure, stating, “All that strength and energy we had from all the fans, from all the Portuguese people, was incredible.” He added, “Thank you for this and I take with me memories for life.”
Having taken over the reins of the Selecao in 2023, Martinez’s departure comes as his contract expires, concluding a three-year period leading the team. Prior to his role with Portugal, the Spanish coach managed several clubs and national teams, including Belgium, Swansea City, Wigan Athletic, and Everton.
