Robin Montgomery secured her place in the main draw of the 2026 US Open by overcoming a challenging final qualifying round against Canada’s Carson Branstine on Thursday. After dropping the first set 2-6, Montgomery rallied to claim the next two sets 6-2, 6-2, demonstrating resilience and skill to clinch her spot in the prestigious tournament.
Robin Montgomery Battles in US Open Qualifiers Run
The 21-year-old Washington, DC native did not have an easy road to the main draw at Flushing Meadows. Before facing Branstine, Montgomery delivered commanding performances in earlier qualifying rounds, defeating Kayla Cross 6-1, 6-1 and then Jeline Vandromme 7-5, 6-3. After a slow start in the final match, she took control by winning 12 of the last 16 games, securing her third career appearance at the US Open.
Reflecting on her progress, Montgomery emphasized the importance of match play, stating after her initial qualifying victory, “For me, I need matches. It’s just another great opportunity. I didn’t know if I was going to make qualifying off my own ranking so I’m just being grateful and keeping perspective.”
The journey to the Grand Slam was especially significant given the challenges Montgomery recently faced. Having missed nine months due to a wrist injury, her return to competitive tennis has been marked by determination and steady improvement as she fights her way back to top form.
