During the production of the highly anticipated ‘God of War’ series, based on the Sony Santa Monica video game and co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, lead actor Ryan Hurst sustained a significant injury that has led to a major casting change. In June, Hurst tore his bicep, an injury that typically requires several months to heal, forcing the studios to recast the role of Kratos to avoid lengthy production delays.

Ryan Hurst’s injury and its impact on production

The bicep tear suffered by Hurst demands a recovery period generally ranging from four to six months, but due to the physical demands of portraying Kratos, full recuperation could extend to as long as a year. This prognosis meant that filming would be postponed until well into 2027, a delay unacceptable for the production timeline. Consequently, the decision was made to replace Hurst with another actor, whose identity remains undisclosed. Pre-production is set to resume in mid-August, with filming planned to restart in October.

Having already undergone surgery, Hurst is currently prioritizing his rehabilitation. He had invested considerable effort into preparing for the role, undergoing a rigorous physical transformation to embody the iconic character. Unfortunately, the injury has interrupted this process, which had been a key part of the series’ development.
