San Diego Wave FC has secured the future of forward Trinity Byars by extending her contract through the 2028 season, the club confirmed on Wednesday. This move comes as the Wave lead the National Women’s Soccer League standings, underscoring their commitment to building a championship-contending squad around one of the league’s standout young talents.

At just 23 years old, Byars has already made a significant impact this season, netting four goals in nine appearances. Notably, three of these goals came after entering matches as a substitute, including two crucial strikes during second-half stoppage time that have directly influenced the Wave’s results. General Manager Camille Ashton praised Byars for her composure and clinical finishing, highlighting her ability to perform under pressure and deliver decisive moments for the team.

Reflecting on her journey with the club, Byars expressed enthusiasm about her continued role with San Diego. “My time in San Diego thus far has been incredible and I’m really excited to continue my career with this club,” she commented.

Byars Hopes to Keep San Diego Wave Atop the NWSL Standings

Byars’ rise to prominence with the Wave is particularly remarkable considering the unconventional path she took to reach this point. She joined San Diego in late 2024 as the first active NCAA athlete to sign with an NWSL club following the league’s decision to move away from the traditional draft system. Unfortunately, her momentum was stalled when she missed the entire 2025 season due to an ACL injury.

After a year of recovery, Byars returned to form in 2026, demonstrating the resilience and skill that have made her a vital component of the Wave’s attack. Currently, San Diego Wave FC leads the NWSL with a record of 9-5-1 and 28 points, and the contract extension ensures that Byars will remain a key figure in their pursuit of the league title.
