Tottenham Hotspur secured a commanding 5-1 victory over Charlton Athletic on Wednesday, advancing to the third round of the League Cup where they will face Liverpool. The match marked a bright turnaround for Spurs after their disappointing 3-0 defeat to Brentford in the Premier League opener just days earlier.
The hosts took control before halftime with two quick goals scored within four minutes by Mikey Moore and Dominic Solanke. Their early dominance set the tone for the rest of the match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Adding to the scoring, substitute Kevin Danso made an immediate impact by netting with his first touch—a deft flicked header off a free-kick in the 67th minute. However, the highlight came from new signing Savio, the Brazilian winger who joined Spurs from Manchester City for a reported initial fee of £75 million ($102 million).
Savio’s Debut Sparkles as Spurs Cruise
Coming off the bench, Savio showcased his skill and confidence by weaving past two defenders before firing a precise shot into the near post in the 82nd minute, marking a memorable debut goal. Just minutes later, his effort indirectly led to the fifth goal when his shot deflected off Spurs captain Ben Davies and into the net, extending the lead further.
Despite Charlton—a second-tier team—managing a consolation goal through defender Lloyd Jones, who headed in from a corner, Tottenham’s superiority was never in doubt.
Reflecting on Savio’s performance, manager Roberto De Zerbi praised the winger’s debut, calling it “a perfect day” for him. De Zerbi also challenged Savio to reach double figures in goals this season, signaling high expectations for the new signing as Spurs look to build momentum in both domestic and cup competitions.
