As September draws near, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is preparing to distribute next month’s Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, following the completion of August 2026 payments. The SSA oversees payments for both Social Security programs—including retirement, disability, and survivor benefits—and the SSI program.

Unlike Social Security benefits, which require recipients to have earned sufficient work credits, SSI supports low-income individuals who are either aged 65 or older or living with a disability. Although SSI payments are handled by the SSA, they operate independently of the traditional Social Security system.

September 2026 Payment Schedule

The first payments in September will be issued to SSI beneficiaries on Tuesday, September 1. This early disbursement targets individuals qualifying through financial need rather than employment history.

Following the initial SSI payments, Social Security benefits for over 71 million recipients across the United States will be distributed according to the familiar three-Wednesdays payment cycle. This schedule segments beneficiaries based on their birth dates, ensuring staggered payment dates throughout the month:

  • Beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th of any month will receive payments on Wednesday, September 9.
  • Those born between the 11th and 20th will be paid on Wednesday, September 16.
  • Recipients with birthdays from the 21st to the 31st will get their payments on Wednesday, September 23.
