At 44 years old, Serena Williams is set to make a remarkable return to Wimbledon’s singles competition, accepting a wild card from the All England Club. This decision marks her comeback to the singles stage after nearly two years away, her last singles match having taken place on September 2, 2022.

Williams’ choice to re-enter the singles draw came after just two official doubles matches and several intense training sessions, which helped her regain confidence. Beyond singles, she will also team up with her sister Venus Williams in the doubles tournament, transforming this Wimbledon into a family affair for the Williams clan.

Throughout her illustrious career, Serena has been a dominant presence at Wimbledon, securing a total of 14 titles—equally split between singles and doubles victories alongside Venus. Despite her time away from singles play, she remains one of the tournament’s most compelling figures.

A family-driven comeback

One of the key motivations behind Serena’s return is deeply personal: her daughters, Olympia, aged 8, and Adira, 2. Serena expressed her desire for her children to witness her compete live on one of tennis’s most prestigious stages, the grass courts of Wimbledon, where she has not won a singles match in seven years.

Speaking at Queen’s Club, Serena shared a lighthearted explanation for her decision, saying, “I didn’t have anything better to do. I was tired of sitting at home, my girls were out of school for the summer, so I said, ‘Why not?’ It’s about my daughters being able to watch me play.”

Alongside this family-driven motivation, the limited match play she undertook was sufficient to convince her that she could meet the physical and competitive demands of the tournament. Her return is poised to be a highlight of Wimbledon, offering fans a chance to see a tennis icon back in action on a grand stage.
