The Social Security Administration (SSA) is on track to complete its benefit payments for September 2026 with just one payment run left this month. The agency manages distributions for both Social Security programs—including retirement, disability, and survivor benefits—and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program.

September’s Social Security Payment Schedule and Key Dates

In the United States, many Social Security beneficiaries receive their payments based on a schedule tied to their birth dates. The agency disburses benefits on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of each month, depending on when recipients were born. For September 2026, this staggered payment cycle concludes next Wednesday, marking the final Social Security distribution for the month.

The schedule for September payments breaks down as follows:

  • Individuals born between the 1st and 10th of any month received their Social Security payments on Wednesday, September 9.
  • Those born between the 11th and 20th were paid on Wednesday, September 16.
  • Recipients with birthdays from the 21st to the 31st will receive their benefits on Wednesday, September 23.

It is important to note that for Social Security benefits claimed based on another person’s work record, the SSA uses the date of birth of that other individual to determine the payment date.

Aside from these Social Security disbursements, the SSA also handles SSI payments on separate dates. In September 2026, the Supplemental Security Income benefits were distributed earlier in the month, with the first payment date occurring on Tuesday, September 1.
