As September 2026 comes to a close, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has completed its scheduled distribution of benefits for this month, covering both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs across the United States.
The SSA has finalized five payment runs for September, addressing benefits for the extensive network of recipients, which includes Social Security retirement, disability, and survivor benefits, alongside SSI payments.
Completion of the Three-Wednesdays Payment Cycle
Among the approximately 71.5 million Social Security recipients, a significant portion receive their monthly payments on one of three Wednesdays. This schedule is determined by the beneficiary’s birthdate, dividing payment days into three groups throughout the month.
For September 2026, the SSA followed this structure precisely:
- Individuals born between the 1st and 10th of any month received their Social Security payments on Wednesday, September 9.
- Those with birthdates from the 11th to the 20th were paid on Wednesday, September 16.
- Recipients born between the 21st and 31st received their funds on Wednesday, September 23.
It is important to note that for beneficiaries receiving Social Security based on someone else’s earnings record, the SSA schedules payments according to that other person’s date of birth.
Additional September Payment Dates
Beyond the three-Wednesdays payment cycle for Social Security, September also included two other distribution dates that were not linked to birthdates. These occurred at the start of the month, before the main cycle began.
