As anticipation builds for the upcoming 2026/27 NCAA women’s basketball season, the latest preseason Power 10 rankings have positioned South Carolina at the summit. Released this month, these rankings highlight the Gamecocks as the team to beat, closely pursued by the UConn women’s basketball program, which sits just behind at second place.
South Carolina’s Strong Returning Core Puts Them Ahead
Under the guidance of head coach Dawn Staley, South Carolina’s squad benefits from a robust returning lineup led by junior guard Joyce Edwards. Edwards, who averaged 19.2 points per game last season, is expected to be a pivotal force for the Gamecocks. Additionally, the team regains the services of Chloe Kitts, who is making a comeback following an ACL tear sustained in October of the previous year. Her return bolsters a frontcourt that was instrumental in South Carolina’s run to the 2025 national title game.
Meanwhile, the UConn Huskies are anchored by junior Sarah Strong, the reigning national player of the year. Strong impressed last season with an 18.4 points per game average, playing under the legendary coach Geno Auriemma. Her presence solidifies UConn’s position as a formidable challenger in the upcoming campaign.
Rounding out the top five in the preseason rankings are Duke, USC, and Michigan. USC’s prospects have been significantly enhanced by the anticipated return of JuJu Watkins, who is recovering from an ACL injury. Michigan, on the other hand, aims to capitalize on the momentum generated by their breakthrough appearance in the Elite Eight last season.
The remainder of the Power 10 consists of Louisville, Texas, Iowa, North Carolina, and LSU. Each program enters the season blending promising newcomers with seasoned veterans, setting the stage for a competitive and dynamic start when the season tips off in November.
