Spain secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Portugal in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, thanks to a stoppage-time goal from substitute Mikel Merino. The late strike, coming in the first minute of added time, sealed a tense encounter in Arlington and propelled the European champions into the quarter-finals, where they will face either the United States or Belgium.

From the outset, Luis de la Fuente‘s team showed attacking intent. Mikel Oyarzabal had an early chance but missed the target, while Diogo Costa was called into action with impressive saves against Lamine Yamal and Alex Baena. Despite Spain’s initial pressure, Portugal gradually found their footing.

Before halftime, Portugal threatened with a powerful shot from Nuno Mendes that struck the crossbar after a deflection from Pedro Porro. Additionally, Cristiano Ronaldo challenged Unai Simon with a tight-angle effort that the Spanish goalkeeper successfully blocked.

Stalemate Broken in Stoppage Time

The second half saw Spain retain the majority of possession, but the Portuguese side remained disciplined defensively, limiting clear scoring opportunities and relying on counter-attacks to create danger. As the match edged toward extra time, it was Ferran Torres who delivered the decisive assist, finding Merino inside the penalty area. The midfielder calmly finished low past Costa, breaking the deadlock and sending La Roja through to the last eight.

This victory not only extends Spain’s unbeaten streak in the competition but also underscores their continued defensive resilience throughout the tournament.
