In a landmark moment for the league, Sydney Romero, shortstop for the Oklahoma City Spark, has been awarded the inaugural Rawlings Gold Glove Award in the AUSL. This accolade recognizes Romero as the league’s premier defensive player for the season.
Romero’s defensive prowess was a key factor throughout the Spark’s 13-12 campaign. She distinguished herself from fellow finalists Jadelyn Allchin of Utah and Alyssa Brito of Carolina by recording an impressive 45 assists, participating in five double plays, and maintaining a stellar .974 fielding percentage.
Recognition of Defensive Excellence
The Rawlings Gold Glove, with a history dating back to its MLB inception in 1957 and recent expansion to NCAA softball in 2022, has now extended its prestigious presence to the AUSL. The decision to include the professional softball league came on the heels of AUSL’s dynamic and rapidly growing second season.
Mike Thompson, Chief Marketing Officer at Rawlings, praised Romero’s contributions, stating, “Sydney embodies everything the Rawlings Gold Glove Award represents. Her instincts, athleticism, consistency, and leadership set the standard for defensive excellence.”
Romero’s achievement not only highlights her individual skill but also marks a significant milestone for the AUSL as it gains recognition among established softball organizations nationwide.
