As the 2026 FIBA World Cup kicks off tomorrow in Berlin, Team USA embarks on a quest for a historic fifth consecutive championship. The reigning champions will rely on a fresh lineup featuring nine newcomers, including standout first-timers Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Paige Bueckers, all of whom bring new energy to the squad.

Despite the absence of seasoned players A’ja Wilson and Kelsey Plum, sidelined by health issues, the US enters the tournament as the clear favorite. The revamped 16-team format has shortened the preliminary round to three games, with the Americans placed in Group D alongside China, Italy, and Czechia.

Global Competition Intensifies

This year’s competition is expected to be tougher than ever, with over 25 WNBA stars representing their respective countries. Teams like France and host nation Germany are poised to challenge the US, while squads from China, Belgium, Australia, and Spain could emerge as formidable dark horses.

Kara Lawson, head coach of Team USA, acknowledged the heightened level of competition: “The depth of these rosters is really strong, which is exciting. It should be hard to win — it’s a World Cup.” Her remarks highlight the demanding road ahead for the defending champions.

The tournament opens with a matchup between Japan and Mali at 5:30 AM ET, followed by the highly anticipated US versus China game at 8:15 AM ET, broadcast on TNT. All eyes will be on Team USA as they begin their title defense on this global stage.
