On September 11, 2001, the United States endured the deadliest terrorist attack in its history, as 19 Al-Qaeda militants hijacked four airplanes and directed them in coordinated suicide missions targeting key American landmarks. The devastating events unfolded rapidly over the course of two hours, resulting in a tragic loss of over 3,000 lives—with 2,750 fatalities in New York City, 184 at the Pentagon, and 40 in Pennsylvania.

Timeline of the Attacks

The morning began like any other Tuesday, but at 8:46 a.m., a Boeing 767 loaded with approximately 20,000 gallons of jet fuel crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact created a massive, fiery breach spanning floors 93 through 99, instantly claiming hundreds of lives and trapping those working on the upper levels.

Initially, many believed the collision to be a tragic accident, prompting an orderly evacuation of both towers. News outlets broadcast live footage of the thick smoke billowing from the North Tower, capturing the horror as it unfolded.

However, just 17 minutes later, at 9:03 a.m., the assumption of an accident was shattered. A second Boeing 767, this one operated by United Airlines, struck the South Tower near its 60th floor. This deliberate attack confirmed the coordinated nature of the assault, plunging the city and the nation into shock and disbelief.

As millions watched anxiously, the attacks continued. At 9:37 a.m., the third hijacked flight crashed into the west side of the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., further intensifying the crisis. Flight 77 had circled the skies of downtown Washington before the devastating impact, adding to the nation’s growing fear and uncertainty.
