The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) is set for a significant shift as the 2027 free agent list has been officially released by the players association, opening the door for teams across the league to pursue some of the sport’s most notable talents.

Leading this year’s free agent class is Rose Lavelle, a key figure for Gotham and the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT). Alongside her, Sophia Wilson of Portland and the legendary Marta from Orlando add substantial star power to the pool of available players.

Other prominent names available include Gotham’s Ann-Katrin Berger, Jess Carter, and Midge Purce, alongside Chicago’s veteran goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher. Portland’s Jessie Fleming, San Diego’s Adrianna Leon, and Washington’s Andi Sullivan and Hal Hershfelt also feature as key figures in this free agency cycle.

NWSL Contract Negotiations Open for 2027 Season

According to the terms outlined in the NWSL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), any player whose contract expires at the close of the 2026 season is now eligible to negotiate new contracts for 2027, regardless of their league service time. This change provides greater flexibility for players and clubs alike, encouraging competitive bidding and roster reshuffling.

While players are permitted to sign with new teams immediately, they will not be able to officially join their new clubs until January 1, 2027. Those who remain unsigned will be classified as unattached free agents, free to pursue opportunities as the new season approaches.
